Life by the Sea – Grandma Ayin
a Visit to a Traditional Fishing Village

Step into a traditional Penghu fishing village and experience daily life through the eyes of its locals. You'll visit the home of Grandma Ayin, who, together with our guide, will take you deep into the village's rhythms. Long before “sustainability” became a global concern, villagers naturally lived in harmony with nature to survive and thrive.

One highlight is the traditional fishing method unique to Penghu — “Baodun” (Stone Weir Fishing) — a time-honored, eco-friendly technique that’s gradually fading due to modern commercial fishing. Despite her age, Grandma Ayin continues to dedicate herself to preserving these coastal fishing grounds. This experience was born to pass on cultural values and promote the sustainability of intertidal fisheries through responsible tourism.

Introduction to Traditional Fishing Techniques

Before entering the intertidal zone, guests will be introduced to a miniature stone weir model we’ve specially designed. Learn about the origins, construction, and function of these traditional “fish houses” — so you're ready to fully experience the real thing later.

Facilities: Restrooms, rinse area
Gear Provided: Water shoes, gloves, and small floating boats for children

Explore Penghu's Richest Intertidal Ecosystem

The tides of the Penghu archipelago carve unique water channels between the islands. As the tide recedes, it reveals a vast intertidal zone — adding nearly one-third more land area to Penghu. These shallow coastal plains are not only home to bizarre and diverse marine life, but they’ve long been a vital source of food for islanders harvesting shellfish, crabs, and shrimp.

In an age of declining fisheries across Taiwan, this rare and protected ecosystem remains abundant and full of surprises. Join local elders and our fun-loving guides to explore this treasure trove — a natural fish market for grown-ups and a wonderland for kids.

Baodun Fishing – Let's Catch Fish!

Led by Grandma Ayin, you'll walk into the intertidal zone to visit the very stone weirs she has built over decades. Every stone and every “fish house” carries generations of wisdom.

Working together, you’ll surround the weirs with nets, then carefully dismantle the rock structures. As the water flows, fish and sea creatures are guided into the nets — an ingenious method passed down from Penghu's ancestors.

Grandma Ayin insists on fishing sustainably. She’ll teach you which fish are big enough for the dinner table, and which ones — especially the small or rare species — should be gently returned to the sea.

Close-Up Encounters with Marine Life

The intertidal zone is bursting with life. Aside from groupers, you may encounter pufferfish, garden eels, sea snails, crabs, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, sea hares, and many other marine creatures. Every day is different — and every visit becomes a new adventure in discovery.

Sustainable Seafood Feast

After a fun and rewarding treasure hunt in the intertidal zone, it's time to enjoy the fruits of your labor!

Back onshore, change into clean clothes and wash up. Meanwhile, Grandma Ayin and her daughter will be preparing a delicious local meal.

In her home kitchen, your freshly caught grouper will be deep-fried to crispy perfection, accompanied by Penghu’s signature seaweed & squid ball noodles. It’s the perfect ending to a journey that connects tradition, ecology, and the joy of sharing a meal together.
